Definition: Masking = Consciously or unconsciously hiding ADHD traits (fidgeting, forgetfulness, emotional reactions) to fit in. Burnout = The physical/emotional collapse after years of masking.
What it looks like: At work: organized, punctual, quiet. At home: total meltdown, unable to talk, crying over a spoon. Friends/family say, "But you're fine at work!"
Why it happens: Masking requires massive cognitive effort—monitoring posture, facial expressions, tone, memory tricks. This is not sustainable. Eventually, the brain's resources deplete.
For Family/Friends:
Say this: "You don't have to perform for me. It's safe to be messy here."
Avoid this: "You were fine yesterday. Why are you falling apart now?"
